BIG PHILANTHROPIES EXPLORE NEW INVESTMENTS IN THE SCIENCE OF LEARNING: The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation signaled interest this week in funding research to improve student outcomes in writing, math and executive function. Through a request for information PostedTuesday, the philanthropies are seeking “promising ideas” on the way students learn – ideas that could guide research and quickly become tools and resources to improve student outcomes. The RFI won’t immediately lead to funding, but will inform a pilot project around the concept.
– “The truth is that we need to dramatically accelerate learning, and to do that, we need to understand it more deeply,” Wrote Jim Shelton and Bob Hughes, who lead K-12 education efforts at CZI and the Gates Foundation, respectively.
